| About Russ & Martin |
A little about Martin…
Martin grew up in a small coastal town in sunny southern California. He always had a love of people, animals and the outdoors—and he still does. Martin grew up with at least one or two dogs in the family home at all times, along with a cat or two. (Of course there was an array of other animals that Martin fell for, like a pair of guinea pigs, any number of rats, rabbits, hamsters, fish and even the occasional snake.) At a young age, as a result of his love for horses, coupled with his persistent begging and undeniable charm, Martin was able to convince his father to get him a horse, who he named Pino. He rode Pino day and night along the railroad tracks or on the pristine shores of the local beaches. (While we won’t go so far as to say that Martin is old, you might want to read between the lines here: it was still legal back then to run your horses along the beach.) Those days on the beach, astride his galloping horse with the sunny California wind in his face were perhaps the very best of his life. It’s easy to see that Martin’s youth was idyllic for any animal lover: days filled with riding and caring for the horse he loved, then falling into bed at night with the faithful family dog at the foot of his bed.
Later, as a young man, Martin went into the floral business, which is what many people in the area were doing at the time.
This is where Martin meets Russ…
Russ had come to California from back east and was working for a company where Martin went to work. Well, the company went out of business, which could’ve been a real disaster, but Russ took the set-back as a sign. He decided it was time to do his own thing, and he opened up a shop and hired Martin as his first employee.
I believe Russ and Martin were brothers in a past life somewhere along the line. They have been working together now for close to a quarter of a century and have not had a single fist fight. I’m not saying Martin doesn't get on Russ's nerves from time to time or vice versa, for that matter, because even the closest of brothers can have some problems to work out now and again. Although they grew up across the country from each other, they came from similar families. What’s more, not only did Russ and Martin both truly love the floral business, they both had a love and deep passion for their furry family members. One day over a cup of coffee, Martin and Russ went from casual conversation to brainstorming just how they could get the latest and greatest items for animal-loved-ones out to other two-legged family members like themselves who wanted only the best for their four legged counterparts, and this is where and when the “Russ and Martin” idea first started to take form.
